Wholesun
Which café in Berlin is in the sun right now?
Wholesun shows which cafés, bars and restaurants in Berlin are in the sun right now – and for how long.
For every place, the app works out when the sun reaches the tables over the surrounding buildings and trees. Especially in winter, when the midday sun in Berlin stands only about 14° high, almost every terrace lies in the shadow of the houses next door. Wholesun finds the few that still get sun.
How it works
- Buildings and trees: official Berlin building heights and the tree register of the Geoportal Berlin, with foliage by season.
- Seats: measured at 1.2 m in front of the façade – or on the outdoor area if it is mapped in OpenStreetMap. The day timeline shows sun and shade in 10-minute steps, also for tomorrow.
- Weather: Open-Meteo forecast in 15-minute steps. When it is cloudy, Wholesun says so instead of promising sun.
The app runs in your browser, is free and needs no account.
Data: Geoportal Berlin (building heights, trees), OpenStreetMap (places, opening hours), Open-Meteo (weather).
